FAQ
Do I need to pay for the whole season up front?
We do not charge for the whole season at one time. Instead you make 5 monthly payments of $52 (for a single mixed basket) or $84 (for a family mixed basket) at the beginning of each month from July to November. We do require that you make a commitment to participate in the program for the entire season (July 9 - November 19), so you should be prepared to make a payment for each of the five months.
What forms of payment can I use to pay for my food?
We currently accept Cash, EBT (Food Stamps), WIC FMNP and Senior FMNP Checks.
How and when am I charged for my food?
Monthly payments are due when you pick up your first basket of the month in the market. When you go to the Basket pick up table, they will steer you to the market coordinator table to accept and record your payment. You must present your full monthly payment at that time to receive your basket. A paid chit is issued which enables you to pickup your basket for that month.
I'll be going on vacation for a week in August, can I cancel my order for a week?
When your application is approved for the Mixed Basket program, you commit to receiving a mixed basket for the 20 weeks of the farmers market season. The season begins July and ends November . Due to the deep discounts being offered in the program, we are unable to make refunds or prorate orders. If you will be out of town and/or do not wish to receive a basket one Saturday, please call and inform the program coordinator so that we do not prepare a basket for you.

Do I pay more for months with more pick-ups?
No, we require the same monthly payment for each month.
Where do I get my food each week?
Your weekly basket is picked at the Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market Saturdays 10am -12pm. The Hattie Carthan Market is located on Clifton Pl. by Marcy Ave. next to the Hattie Carthan Community Garden. Take the G to Bedford/Nostrand or B38 to Marcy Ave.
Where does the food I'm receiving come from?
All of the produce at the Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market comes from local farms within 150 miles of Bed-Stuy. Many of the fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown at the Hattie Carthan Community Garden and Hattie Carthan Herban Farm by our resident farmer who tends the Herban Farm and 20 plots at the Community Garden for market. Other produce comes from our partner farms the Lancaster Farmers' Cooperative, Glebocki Farms, Migliorelli Farm and Red Jacket Orchards. The local eggs come from the 2 Hattie Carthan Community Garden chicken coops and organic dairy farms in Lancaster county.
How much money am I saving on food?
Our Mixed Baskets are discounted from normal retail prices. The weekly price of a Single Mixed Basket without eggs or herbs is $13 and a Family Mixed Basket is $21. The price for the whole season, 20 weeks, is $260 for a single size and $420 for a family size. On average for a similar amount of food a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture in which you pick up a weekly allotment, or share, of produce) costs roughly $15-$18 for a half share or $28-$30 for a full share. A CSA’s seasonal cost is $300-$350 for a half share and $550-$600 for a full share. That’s a seasonal savings of $100 + when you sign up for the Hattie Carthan Mixed Basket program! Your support is critical to the success of our small farming operation.
