The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. 2016 brings several new improvement and initiatives at the Market. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market opened for its first season on July 11, 2009 and has distributed over 10 tons of fresh food over the past eight seasons of operation. This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, host author readings in the children’s garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.
The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly improved cooking island area in September, offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops new herbal farm and, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs: The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program..
The Sunday market which reopens for a fourth season July 31st 2016 on the farm, will host a series of Healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non invasive healing modalities for humans. This year, the farm was preserved from development and will begin a three year ramp up campaign in order to create the infrastructure needed to operate an herbal distribution program which supplies local herbs and herbal products to the natural healing community.
Across the United and States, rates of obesity and diabetes are increasing dramatically, particularly within lower-income, African-American, and Latino communities. Growing research demonstrates that the low rate of consumption of healthy foods which drives disease rates is due to limited access to healthy choices. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is a community solution to the issue of poor nutrition and food insecurity in the Bedford Stuyvesant community. The community food project works to ensure food justice is served in all communities. The community revitalization/food justice project is led by resident urban farmer Yonnette Fleming, V.P. of the Hattie Carthan Community Garden and founder of the farm and its two markets.
