The creation of a new Herban Farm in District 36:
March 2011 Community outreach began to get neighbors invested in new farming project and rehabilitation of neglected neighborhood lot.
April 2011 License was signed for the new site at 49 Van Buren St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
Fleming worked with neighborhood greening groups to organize support for the new farm.
May 15, 2011 Fleming launched 10 day volunteer work campaign to clean out and begin rebuilding the space.
Removed debris and carted away toxic soil
Cleared out and remediated soil
Designed new gardens for space
Used recyclable materials to build walls and draining
systems.
Solarized invasive weeds
Created the community composting system
May 30, 2011 New soil arrives and planting begins
Planted beds with herbs and foods
Trees and fruiting bushes arrived
Put in farm rows
Designed the sacred circle garden
Planned medicinal labrinth garden, designed paths
and planted medicinal herbs
June 2011 Neighbors show excitement and support for the new farm, and drop by to work on the farm whenever the gate is open.

Join Organic Soul Chef Madea as she conducts cooking demos
with aspiring youth chefs. Youths will learn about seasonal
eating and food prep techniques used by professional chefs. If you are a youth who is excited by farmers markets, healthy Eating and outdoor cooking, this might be the place for you to start.

Saturday afternoon. Fleming is an urban farmer/ plant
medicine practitioner who has taught herbalism in
various communities and tended the extensive herb garden at Hattie Carthan for the last decade. Explore new flavors, recipes and ideas with a variety of garden grown herbs! Free Health bucks will be distributed to those attending the cooking class in the marketplace.
