Senior Reduced Price Market Basket Application.pdf
Qualifying seniors sign up for a season of farm-fresh, local produce. Seniors receive a Reduced Price Senior Mixed Market Basket weekly that contains about 8 different varieties of seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs. Seniors have the option to order a basket for one or a larger basket for couples and/or families. The Single Senior Mixed Basket has enough produce to last one person through
the week and the Large Senior Mixed Basket suits couples and/or families. In the summer a basket
might have a combination of peaches, squash, tomatoes, peppers,
basil and plums. In the cooler months a Basket could contain
greens, turnips, sweet potatoes, cabbage or broccoli and other
cool season crops.
The deeply discounted weekly cost of a Single Senior Mixed
Market Basket is $7 and a Large Senior Mixed Market Basket is
$15. The Fresh Food on Wheels Program creates an alternative
to CSA programs and does not require a large upfront payment
for the season. Instead participants make a payment at the beginning of each month of the
season July - November with Cash or EBT(food stamps).
Baskets are delivered weekly by Market youths and volunteers. Fresh Food on Wheels is an affordable option that increases access to fresh produce for less mobile, or homebound seniors, and creates the opportunity for a weekly visit building relationsips between market youths and neighborhood seniors.
To qualify for the Senior Reduced Price Mixed Market Basket Program, Seniors fill out a basic application establishing eligibility based on age and location. You can download an application for yourself, a friend or family member here or call 212-561-7327.
All of the Fresh Food on Wheels produce comes from local farms within 150 miles of Bed-Stuy. Many of the fruits and vegetables are grown right next door at the Hattie Carthan Community Garden by community members. To find out more about the Hattie Carthan Community Garden please visit: www.hattiecarthangarden.com
Everyone who is participating in the Fresh Food on Wheels program is eligible for free delivery. The weekly baskets will be packed at the market with fresh farm produce and delivered to your home by a market intern or volunteer.
We do not charge for the whole season at one time. Instead you make 5 monthly payments of $28 (for a single senior mixed basket) or $60 (for a large senior mixed basket) at the beginning of each month from July November. We do require that you make a commitment to participate in the program for the entire season (July 10 November 20), so be prepared to make a payment for each of the five months.
What forms of payment can I use to pay for my food?
You may choose to use EBT/food stamps or cash to pay for your monthly payment. You make
the full payment with either EBT or cash each month, we cannot process a combination of these
payments. But you can choose to alternate payments monthly, pay for one month with cash and
the next month use your food stamps and vice versa. For instance if you make your $28 payment
for July with cash, but in August you would like to use food stamps you may make your $28
payment for August with EBT. You simply need to indicate that by phone before the first weekly
delivery of the month.
How and when do I get charged for my food?
The monthly payment is $28 for the Single Senior Mixed Basket and $60 for the Large Senior Mixed Basket. At the beginning of each month of the program (July Nov) you will be charged the monthly payment. That is five payments of $28 or $60 from July November. If you choose to pay for the month with your food stamps, you must call the Market Operations Coordinator 212-594-2122x9, and she will process your EBT/food stamps charge over the phone, or return your call within twenty-four hours to do so. If you choose to pay with EBT, this payment must be made before the first basket of the month is received (before the first Saturday of the month). Please indicate the best monthly date to process your EBT charge on your application. When you call please be prepared to provide your EBT number (on the front of your EBT card) and your pin number. If you would like to make your monthly payment with cash, this payment will be received by the person delivering your first basket of the month. To receive your basket, you must have your $28 or $60 monthly cash payment ready when your basket is delivered on the first Saturday of each month.
Do I pay more for months with more Saturday deliveries?
No, we require the same monthly payment for each month.
